Laser based safety mechanism for Tanneries

There have been many incidents near the drum section in tanning industries which have been reported. The main objective is to make a cost efficient and reliable safety system for the workers. The percentage of incidents to fatal has to be reduced. We have developed in two phases. The first phase has a safety gate with laser detection.

The system works on laser detection and operates accordingly.  There are two levels of safety systems installed in the drum section:

  • Alarm system
  • Power shut down mechanism

The first level has a metal gate with laser detection and an industrial alarm. When anyone crosses the gate it is detected and warned by the alarm system. The gate can be controlled by an external switch for the purpose of loading and unloading. The safety gate prevents the victim from slipping and gives a support. In the second level there is a laser detection system, with provision to cut down the power to drum immediately when anyone crosses the second level of laser beam.


The industry has provided us a place in their R&D centre and extended all sorts of support in our project and research work. Implementation of safety aspect in wet drum area of TRUKEM, Chennai, is successfully done and appreciated by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Expert.
